Welcome to the Positively Living Podcast. I’m your host Lisa, and I’m looking forward to our conversation today because I get to bust some myths and help you understand a technique that you might have thought wasn’t right for you.
I’m sure you see references to vision boards everywhere, especially around this time of year, and it’s easy to assume what they are and what goes on them, but like any other habit or technique, one size does not fit all.
How to Create a Vision Board That Works
Today, I’m going to help you understand the following:
- What Vision Boards actually are.
- Why we create them and the science behind them.
- How to identify your “vision”.
- The many types & styles and how to choose the right type of board.
- How to actually use your board, so it actually works.
What is a Vision Board?
A vision board is an image-based board for goal setting. You display images representing whatever you want to be, do, or have in your life – it’s a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on specific life goals
Visualize the thing that you want. See it, feel it, believe in it. Make your mental blueprint, and begin to build. -Robert Collier
Why do we create vision boards instead of just listing goals?
- It creates a sacred, focused space for our goals.
- Our brains work visually.
- Bring familiarity to new concepts to allow breakthroughs.
- Brings ideas top of mind.
- Helps us with visualization practice.
Creating the Vision Board
- Type – purpose – what’s it helping you accomplish? Chapter
- Style – where are you keeping your content? Physical? Digital?
- Vision – what content will you include?
What type of vision board do you want to create? Here are a few ideas: Wellness/Health, New Habits, Individual or Family/Group, Personal or Business, Learning/Growing, Combined, Etc.
How do you want to style your vision board? Here are a few ideas: Classic poster board with magazine cutouts; Corkboard, Whiteboard/combination; Photo board
Digital Collection – Pinterest, Subliminal, Hay House, Wishboard
Image collage – Canva, PicCollage
Ask yourself these questions to get started on what to add to your vision board.
- What goals am I working on?
- What do I want to see more of in my life?
- What energizes me? What do I love to be surrounded by?
- When I imagine myself reaching those goals, what does my life look like?
- What changes do I want to make?
- Who/what inspires me?
Now, take those answers and translate them to a visual collage:
- Focus on how you want to feel. You don’t need literal images
- Match the energy of what you want so you can create familiarity
- If you like it, add it.
A few things to consider:
- What colors? What subjects? What styles? What inspires you? Calms you?
- Magazines-Catalogs-Junk Mail-Post Cards
- Greeting Cards-Coloring Books-Photos
- Planners/Journals-Gratitude Slips
- Print out quotes/mantras
- For digital: Scan or search; you can print them too.
Be Creative and Make It Fun
Here are some ideas on how you can make your vision board more fun:
- Personal images, reminders
- Use gratitude jar/basket slips
- Make it interactive – whiteboards and chalkboards
After You’ve Finished your Vision Board
Display it & Make it interactive:
- Take a picture and set reminders — meditation & journaling, morning ritual
- Create affirmations & habits that reinforce what you have visually
- Journal about this process (or at least have a conversation with a trusted advisor). What came up? What surprised you? What did you let go of?
- Time to renew: Update or add at any time. Change when you are ready.
