While there are many systems for decluttering and experts advising you on how to approach clutter, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The key to finding the approach that is best for you is creating your own framework, which is one of the things I help clients do as a coach. I use a 6-step system with the acronym SIMPLE to help declutter your space and do so in a way that will last. This week, episode 246 of the Positively Living Podcast is about a SIMPLE™ way to reduce clutter and stress!

In this episode of the Positively Living Podcast, I share how my SIMPLE™ system helps you to approach clutter in a way that aligns with your unique needs and goals. I also walk you through the steps to apply this framework to tackle clutter in a sustainable way.

Key Takeaways:

  • Examples of how I have helped clients tackle their clutter and lift the mental and emotional weight tied to it.
  • Breaking down the acronym SIMPLE: Set, Identify, Match, Pare, Limit, and Evaluate, using the example of decluttering a kitchen to visualize the process.
  • How you can use this framework to declutter any space in your life, doing it in a way that lasts.

The Problem of Clutter

Clutter can be a significant source of stress in our lives. It can make us feel overwhelmed, disorganized, and out of control. When our homes are cluttered, it can be challenging to relax and unwind. When our workplaces are cluttered, it can be difficult to focus and be productive.

It isn’t until we go through the process of decluttering that we realize the mental and emotional weight we are holding because of it.

The Benefits of Decluttering

Decluttering has many benefits, both physical and mental. When we declutter our homes, we create more space for the things that matter to us. We can find things more easily, and our homes become more inviting places to live. When we declutter our workplaces, we can improve our focus and productivity. We can also reduce stress and anxiety.

The SIMPLE™ Decluttering System

The SIMPLE™ system is a six-step decluttering system that can be used to declutter any space in your life. The steps are as follows:

  • SET: Set yourself up for success. This means scheduling time for your decluttering project, gathering the supplies you’ll need, and setting goals.
  • IDENTIFY: Identify your why. What is the purpose of the space you are decluttering? What do you want to use the space for?
  • MATCH: Match like items together. This will help you to see how much of each item you have and make it easier to decide what to keep and what to get rid of.
  • PARE: Pare down your belongings. Use your filters to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. Be honest with yourself about what you use and what you don’t.
  • LIMIT: Limit the amount of stuff you keep. This will help you to prevent clutter from accumulating in the future.
  • EVALUATE: Evaluate your progress and make adjustments as needed. Decluttering is an ongoing process, so it’s important to take some time to reflect on your progress and make changes as needed.

How to Use the SIMPLE™ System

To use the SIMPLE™ system, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the space you want to declutter.
  2. Set aside some time for your decluttering project.
  3. Gather the supplies you’ll need, such as garbage bags, donation boxes, and labeling supplies.
  4. Work through the six steps of the SIMPLE™ system.
  5. Take before-and-after photos to track your progress.
  6. Celebrate your accomplishments!
