While I’m thrilled to coach you every episode (and will continue to do so), it’s also my goal to equip you with the resources to coach yourself for maximum growth and achievement. Today. I’m doing this through a series of simple yet powerful questions in an unexpected order. This week, episode 242 of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast is about a reverse approach to better achieve your goals!
In this episode of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast, I’m sharing the “BE, DO, HAVE” model that will help you define what you truly want and understand the meaning behind your goals. Through examples and practical steps, I walk you through everything you need to know to reverse-engineer your approach to goal setting and personal development.
Key Takeaways:
- How you can apply the “be the change you want to see” approach to your goals by identifying then embodying the qualities, attitudes, and beliefs that align with your vision.
- How aligned and inspired action in the form of consistent, habitual steps will be a natural course of action when you start what you want to be.
- Practical tips and next steps you can take to apply this method in your own life.
The Challenge with Traditional Goal Setting
Often, we approach goals linearly: “I need to HAVE a [desired outcome] to DO [specific actions], and then I’ll BE [desired state].” For example, “I need to HAVE a certain amount of money to buy my family a house, and then we’ll BE happy.” While this sounds like a direct and logical way to approach goal setting, how often have we thought in this direction only to have it not work?
This approach can be frustrating because it ignores the foundation for success: who you are.
Introducing the “Be, Do, Have” Model
The “Be, Do, Have” model, a framework I use to help clients with personal development, flips the script and emphasizes the importance of first becoming the type of person who embodies the qualities necessary for achieving your goals, knowing the rest will follow. Here are the three questions I encourage you to ask yourself when visualizing your goals. Keep in mind that order matters here.
- What do I want to BE?
- What do I want to DO?
- What do I want to HAVE?
How This Approach Works
Considering the order of the three questions, you first emphasize the importance of becoming the type of person who embodies the qualities necessary for achieving your desired goals. The idea is that when you shift your mindset to BEING, it informs the actions you take- the DOING- which then ultimately leads to actually achieving the results you seek- the HAVING.
- BE: Identify and cultivate the qualities, attitudes, and beliefs that align with your vision. For instance, if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, start by embodying confidence, resilience, consistency, and creativity.
- DO: Inspired action naturally follows when you embody your desired state. You’ll find yourself taking actions that align with your true self and vision.
- HAVE: The tangible results you desire become a natural consequence of your “being” and “doing.”
This approach focuses on aligned action, meaning consistent habits that move you toward your goals.
Examples of the “Be, Do, Have” Model in Action
Example 1: Health & Wellness
Client Scenario: A client wishes to become more healthy and active.
BE: Someone who prioritizes choices that nourish body and mind.
DO: Exercise regularly, eat nutritious foods, and prioritize sleep and stress management.
HAVE: Increased energy, improved well-being, and a greater sense of vitality.
Example 2: Writing a Book
Client Scenario: A business owner struggles to find time to write a book amidst work and family commitments.
BE: A consistent, creative author who prioritizes writing, reading, and networking.
DO: Schedule dedicated writing time, create a writing ritual, and organize research and writing.
HAVE: Completed book manuscript.
The Importance of Patience
Change takes time, especially when we are seeking transformation and achievement. That’s why I recommend working with a coach for at least 3 months. Consistent practice is key to solidifying habits and seeing results.
I know it can be difficult to wait, but the results will be worth it. And, if you consider the person you need to BE to do the thing you want to do… that successful person is undoubtedly patient, too.
Taking Action with the Be-Do-Have Model
Here’s how you can use the Be-Do-Have model for yourself:
- Reflect on the Questions: Ask yourself the three questions and write down your answers:
- What do I want to BE?
- What do I want to DO?
- What do I want to HAVE?
- Get Specific About “Being”: Identify the specific qualities you need to embody.
- Take Inspired Action: Start with small, consistent habits aligned with your desired “being” state.
- Visualize Your Success: What will achieving your goals look like? Consider creating a vision board.
